To keep your edge nice and loose she also suggests casting onto two needles at once as you want the top of sock loose enough to stretch out a bit.

The explanation in the beginning of how the heel is knit is a great help for people who haven't knit socks before or wonder how would this be accomplished on straight needles. It was reassuring that she has thought of all the questions readers would have. Throughout the book advice is given on how to fix mistakes you have made which is a great help and reassurance.

Instructions are clear and easy to understand, techniques laid out in the beginning for guidance, with the usual glossary in the back. The first few patterns are a little boring for those more experienced in knitting but they better and more intricate as you go along. Some seem a little silly, but most are so fun and stylish!

Favorite patterns to look for: Moccasocks- I find these ridiculous but they look like so much fun, especially as gifts or to wear all around the house. They are made to fit above skinny jeans so they are definitely with the times. Coffee break- I just love the colors of these socks and the frilly edge is delightful Slainte - These are gorgeous socks and with the cute buttons on top I can't wait to try this pattern! Winter Delights : Gingerbread men and snowmen - definitely something I'd knit in winter, the colors are so cute and cozy, the top edges are frilly and stylish. Carnegie Hall - They did indeed save the best for last.

These are adorable, it looks so perfect and incorporates crochet edges for frills. The Bow is wonderful and adds that perfect little touch on a black tie affair for your feet! I can't wait to try some of these patterns! Feb 23, thuy rated it really liked it Shelves: crafts , netgalley , review-written , books-inweeks Though I am not a prolific sock knitter I tend to lose steam after the first sock , I do enjoy making them and am always trying to encourage people to take the plunge and knit them, too.

One of the most common excuses I hear for not knitting socks is that people don't know how to use double points or that using them for socks seems too difficult. Of course I have heard of knitting socks on straight needles but they never seemed like anything I would want to wear. Socks are meant to be well fitt Though I am not a prolific sock knitter I tend to lose steam after the first sock , I do enjoy making them and am always trying to encourage people to take the plunge and knit them, too. Socks are meant to be well fitting and comfortable and I did not think that a seamed sock could be either of those things.

However, when I saw the title of this book along with the very cute pair of socks on the cover, I was intrigued and requested this book for review to see for myself what this innovative technique was. The first part of the book explains the anatomy of a sock and the basic construction using two straight needles or a circular used a a straight needle. It also goes through the technique for seaming the sock with a crochet chain, which produces a straight, smooth seam. The author also goes into some detail about toe and heel types. There is a basic sock to start with, that will help familiarize you with the technique.

From there you can choose from a wide variety of sock styles to knit.

From intricate lace and cables, ribbed patterns, and even some colorwork, there's really something for everyone. The patterns are laid out neatly and are easy to read. The instructions are clear and I had no problem understanding them. I also love that there were a lot of really gorgeous pictures of the socks, including close ups of pattern stitches.

So many modern knitting books are more concerned with having pretty girls in dresses with out of focus knits, so it's really nice to see really good, attractive pictures that still focus on the knitting. My favorite socks were the Maple Seed Whirlies, which had a pretty cable pattern. My least favorite pair of socks were the Moccasoks which have some unfortunate fringe. Many of the patterns are also unisex and would be great for both men and women. I was initially a little skeptical about this book, believing that socks knit on straight needles would not be as attractive as those knit the traditional way on double points.

However, this book has proven me wrong. I don't know if I want to put away my trusty double points but, if I wanted to knit socks on straight needles, I would definitely use this book and the techniques in it, to do it. Knit Your Socks On Straight would be great for a new sock knitter who is not ready to take the step to double points just yet or even for a more advanced knitter who wants to try a new technique.

There was variation in the type of yarn used mult-colored or one-color or using more than one yarn color for strips. Each had a seam that varied from under the foot and up the back or on top of the foot. Alice Curtis in Knit Your Socks on Straight gives knitter who are uncomfortable with knitting on circulars or multiple needles a chance to make socks.

There are plain socks to get a feel for the pattern basics. Then there are some familiar lace patterns, cabled socks, and even a pattern for a pair of argyle socks. The book has a nice section on basic sock how-to instructions. This section explains the way the patterns are set up and the importance of measurement and gauge and how to get both of these.

Caution: Each pattern, because of the seam, has right foot and a left foot instructions. It is also critical to slip the first stitch so that you can seam the sock more easily. There are instructions. I did read through nearly all of the pattern instructions and they seemed well written and clear — but, then most knitters realize that what seems clear and concise on the first read may seem a bit muddy when the stitches are on the needles and you forgot to mark you place in the pattern.

Have you seen this book yet, that just came out today? Have you admired the crazy gorgeous yarn on the front cover or the designs on the inside? Have you started knitting socks yet? Anyone who reads my blog knows I knit a lot of socks - a lot - though I make mainly basic, easy, toe up socks and don't often challenge myself in the socknitting department I'll challenge myself with crochet sometimes, but knitting Now, that being said, I love to knit in the round and regularly turn flat knit patterns into being knit in the round but I can't wait to start the socks in this book. OK, whew So the book begins with the basics Then come the socks There's 15 patterns here, from the basic worsted weight sock to the fancy, fingering weight texture or cabled socks, and there's baby socks and heavier slipper socks.

Alice Curtis, who's an LYS owner lucky girl , even explains the best way to seam the socks Crocheters, are you listening? She's having us slip stitch the sock seam! Feb 05, Julie Barrett rated it it was amazing. I love knitting and 2. I've knit socks but need to improve my skill level and thought this is a different way to knit socks. First are the basics and then different techniques and why they might work for some socks and sometimes other methods look better in the long run.

One thing I found most helpful was the discussion of the different heels and the different toe shapes. I've done a few just following a pattern on 4 needles. Like the layout of the patterns and what is needed, gauge and just the cleanness of how it's all laid out in front of you. Love the magnified stitch of each of the socks, and their very colorful playful names for the socks.

Most important to me as I can wear a man's size 10 shoe, love the variety of sizes available. Fireside would be my favorite, elegant but simple stitching. For the more challenging there are 5 patterns that are charted. The others are all row by row written instructions. Great book, one for all levels and you can feel great about being able to make socks if you've dreaded the complications of making them. This book makes them an easy thing to do. Comes with abbreviations and diagrammed glossary of how to do some techniques. The spiral bound book also would be great for not losing your place as the book can lie flat.

Socks are one of those projects that knitters either love or hate; there are tons of patterns and beautiful yarns to make unique, comfortable creations, but the technique can be a bit daunting for some. If you've always tended to shy away from double-pointed needles, don't give up hope! Yes, these socks have seams, but don't let that thought dissuade you. Curtis provi Socks are one of those projects that knitters either love or hate; there are tons of patterns and beautiful yarns to make unique, comfortable creations, but the technique can be a bit daunting for some.

Curtis provides detailed descriptions of how to make smooth seams that don't detract from comfort, as well as different types of toes and simple, straight-forward heels. There are differences between left and right socks, but instructions for both are provided in each pattern. The patterns themselves are darling, and perusing these pages will have you itching to run to your nearest craft store to pick up supplies for some new projects. The pattern instructions are easy to understand, and while you do need some knitting experience to work your way through, there are refresher instructions on things like swatching and casting on.

Happy knitting! May 01, Lisa rated it really liked it Shelves: arcs. Overall: The pictures were good and useful. The pattern I used was clearly written and well explained. The techniques were not too complicated, and the novelty of knitting straight was enough of a hook pardon the pun that I was excited to try making a sock.

This was also my first ever sock I didn't pin like I was adv Overall: The pictures were good and useful.

About This Item

I didn't pin like I was advised to as I didn't have pins and got a little lazy, but I think. Managed very well. This was a fun enough sock to make that I am actually going to make the right sock now. I wasn't sure if I was actually pin to make a pair or just one to show off. I made the large size and its a little big on me. Perfect for around the house or in boots, but not in sneakers.
